Meet Tom McCormick

I Want You to Know Who I Am, Where I Started, My Work Ethics, My Faith, My Beliefs and that I am Running for Commissioner to Serve You!

Local small business owner, Tom McCormick, was born and raised in St. Joseph County in North Liberty, where his roots are deeply planted. After a childhood spent working on the farm of his father and grandfather, and numerous activities and leadership positions in organizations such as Boy Scouts, FFA, and 4-H, McCormick graduated from John Glenn High School with the class of 1990.

Upon high school graduation, he joined the Liberty-Green Township Volunteer Fire Department, where he’s served for 34 years and continues to do so. He gained first-hand experience of the day-to-day duties and responsibilities while working at the county’s highway department. He says, “From filling potholes, to mowing road sides, and scooping up dead critters, I understand the hard work county employees perform.”

With IBEW Local #153 in South Bend, McCormick obtained an Electrician Apprenticeship for Koontz-Wagner Electric under the leadership of St. Joseph County Councilman Richard Pfeil, where he not only gained the skill and trade of an electrician but also the leadership skills required to run a crew and maintain customer service relations.

Currently he owns McCormick Electrical Services which has served over 7,600 clients for the past 24 years throughout the Michiana area and five surrounding counties. He and his team have earned multiple five-star reviews. McCormick has been named as a “Michiana’s 40 Under 40 Business Professional in the years of 2007 and 2010, as well as the North Liberty Community Person of the Year.

Additionally, McCormick serves as President of the Liberty Township board, which he has been a part of for ten years. He has also been an active part of the North Liberty Chamber of Commerce, South Bend Regional Chamber of Commerce, and the National Electrical Service Organization, where he’s served on an executive board.

Values

Hard Work/ Fiscal Responsibilities/ Perseverance

As a teen, Tom McCormick learned how hard work is the tool that overcomes hardship when his investment in a crop was ruined by drought. To pay his debt, Tom took a job at the local Feed Mill and Elevator. The hard work paid off, and he graduated from high school debt-free, yet rich in a basic understanding of business, industry, and the necessity of perseverance.

Dedication

Any small business owner can tell you that the fruits of success do not come easily. Success requires persistence and stamina over the long haul. Tom knows this firsthand, having carried McCormick Electrical Services through economic recessions and a pandemic. For Tom, failure is not an option in the face of the Midwestern hometown values that make the world go ’round.

Faith

For more than four decades, Tom was active with the North Liberty Church of Christ. In 2020, he and his family began attending The Vineyard Church in Mishawaka. Tom jumped right in, joining multiple mission trips to help with storm cleanup and rebuilding. Tom serves on the church’s “Emergency Response Team,” ever ready to assist anyone in need during church gatherings.

Family

In 2003, Tom married Karen McCormick-Horvath of South Bend and Mishawaka. He has been blessed with three children: Katie McCormick-Rimmler, a schoolteacher on a German U.S. military base; Robert McCormick, a mechanic in St. Joseph County; and Andrew McCormick, a high school senior who works at a local financial institution in the county.
